Packing for the Trip

Pack light. Clothing for 4-5 days is sufficient, as inexpensive laundry services are widely available in tourist areas. Bring light clothing that is easy to wash and iron. Sandals and light shoes are adequate – leave at home heavy hiking boots unless you plan some serious walking. A sweater is handy for cool season nights and drastically air-conditioned buildings. Top hotel restaurants usually require a tie, sometimes a jacket.

Women take note: Sanitary napkins are far more common in Thailand than tampons. If you really prefer tampons, it is best to bring your own. If you are on prescription medicine, bring adequate supplies. Ask your doctor for alternate names of the drugs you are taking.

Useful items:

  • First aid kit
  • Small alarm clock
  • Sunglasses
  • Lighter (for mosquito coils)
  • Ear plugs
  • Universal sink plug
  • Short clothesline and pegs
  • Small back pack
  • Light rain jacket
  • Men’s/women’s sarong (available in Thailand – very versatile)
